New legislative changes to the Canadian Citizenship Act

The Government of Canada has introduced a set of new measures and changes to the Citizenship Act on June 19th, 2017 that will ultimately simplify and offer greater flexibility for those who wish to obtain Canadian citizenship.

Among the changes that are scheduled to become effective on October 11th, 2017 are measures that will offer more flexibility to both younger and older eligible immigrants to obtain citizenship; reduce the time permanent residents must be physically present in Canada to three our of five years before applying for citizenship (instead of four out of six years); amending the age range for people to meet the language and knowledge requirements for citizenship to 18-54 years (instead of 14-64 years); and counting some of the time applicants spend in Canada as temporary residents toward their physical presence requirements for citizenship.

Canada’s Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Ahmed Hussen, stated:

“Canada’s identity has always been shaped by the significant economic, cultural and social contributions of immigrants. Changes to the Citizenship Act will enhance program integrity, while giving more flexibility to eligible applicants to meet the requirements for citizenship so that they can continue building successful lives in Canada.”

Candidates who wish to take advantage of these new measures will have to wait until the modifications become effective and the availability of new citizenship applications forms before submitting their application.
